「EP.53」 甲州水晶貴石細工
KOSHU SUISHO KISEKI ZAIKU
(Koshu Crystal & Gemstone Carving)
Yamanashi Prefecture
「transcript」
Over 1,000 years ago, raw quartz crystal was discovered in the mystical forests of Mt. Kinpu, Yamanashi. Once revered as sacred artifacts in its natural form, it later became the foundation of one of Japan’s most dazzling crafts: Koshu Suishou Kiseki Zaiku.
The technique evolved in the Edo period when Kyoto artisans introduced polishing with powdered diamond. By the Meiji period, demand for crystal goods soared, driving innovation in technique and precision.
This craft stands out not just for its raw beauty, but the mastery needed to reveal it. Each stone has both usable and unusable sections, and even the slightest shift in pressure can cause irreversible damage. On top of that, carving is done blind, guided only by touch, as the sand hides progress. That’s why every step demands total focus and instinct.
Today, Koshu Suishou Kiseki Zaiku goes far beyond Buddhist statues and dragons. It includes contemporary sculptures, fine jewelry, and works gifted to the Imperial family, proving that this Yamanashi-born craft continues to shine both in tradition and modern expression.
