Producers of Japanese craft
OTO connects global brands and design studios with the right makers, materials, and methods in Japan, and runs the work end to end.
Most projects that involve Japan stall in the same place.
The idea is clear, the maker is not, and the distance between a design intent and a workshop in Ishikawa is wider than it looks.
OTO closes that distance. We hold relationships with more than 1,456 makers and ateliers across Japan, and we manage sourcing, production, and delivery so the work arrives as specified.
We work alongside our clients from the first conversation to the final delivery.
Why this is hard
Everything you've heard about madein Japan is half right.
-
The workshops aren't hiding, they're uninterested.
Many Japanese craft manufacturers have decided that exporting isn't worth the logistics, language and payment complexity. That's a business decision, not an information gap.
-
The good ones are already busy.
Workshops that can maintain a high standard at meaningful volume often have limited capacity. They choose which projects to take.
-
And they're vetting you too.
Japanese suppliers are careful about who they take on. A first approach that leads with price and delivery speed reads as someone who won't be around next year.
Somebody has to already be in the room, and they have to be worth the workshop's time.

Why us
1,456+ direct maker relationships
Ceramics, lacquer, metalwork, textile, glass, wood, paper, stone, bamboo.
Built since 2023 through project work, research and going to the workshops in person, and every single one is direct, with nobody sitting between us and the bench.
The value is knowing who has capacity, who can meet your specification, who exports, who will develop something new, and who is the right fit for the project.
That information isn't published anywhere. It's the network behind the work.
Our network spans Japan's nationally designated traditional craft categories and extends beyond them into independent workshops and manufacturers.
