Over 350 years ago, when peace replaced warfare, Hikone’s armor and weapon craftsmen redirected their skills toward Buddhist altar‑making. They settled along Nanamagari (七曲がり), a winding street that became the center of this new industry, and the birthplace of the Hikone Butsudan.

At the center of this craft is koubunanashoku (工部七職), the Seven Artisans who work in seamless succession. The kijishi (木地師) builds the frame with nail-less hozogumi (細組み) joinery, and the kudenshi (宮殿師) constructs a miniature temple from over a thousand tiny wooden parts. The chokokushi (彫刻師) carves detailed motifs, while the kazarikanagushi (錺金具師) engraves and shapes hundreds of brass and copper ornaments. The nushi (塗師) adds depth with repeated layers of natural lacquer, and the makieshi (蒔絵師) paints scenes in colored lacquer, finishing them with gold and sliver. Finally, the kinpakuoshishi (金箔押師) hand-presses more than a thousand sheets of gold leaf, giving the altar its signature brilliance.

Once all parts are completed, they are assembled at the shōbu (商部), a process that can take several months to two years.

Today, Hikone Butsudan continue to evolve through both grand traditional models and modern compact designs suited for contemporary homes.
