「EP.60」 備前長船日本刀
BIZEN OSAFUNE
Okayama
「transcript」
The Japanese katana has existed for over a thousand years, and when it comes to katanas, few names shine brighter than Bizen Osafune (備前長船).
Located in Okayama Prefecture, Bizen has been a sword-making hub for over a millennium. With iron sand, clean water, pine charcoal, and river access, it fostered legendary swordsmiths. Through war and peace, Bizen sword-making evolved, from battlefield weapons to refined works of art. Now, over half of all katanas designated National Treasures were forged here.
But swordsmithing is never a solo craft. It’s a collaboration of specialists.
The forger strengthens the blade by layering hard and soft steels. Polishers spend over 80 hours across 12 stages to bring out its brilliance. The blade collar is made from softer metals to protect the edge. A woodworker spends over a week crafting the scabbard to ensure it fits precisely. A lacquer artist waterproofs and finishes it. An engraver decorates the hilt with motifs, and a hilt binder braids silk to reinforce grip.
Only through these craftsmen’s hands can the sacred katana come to life.
