drums, wood, large drum

「EP.74」 石川の大太鼓

ODAIKO
Ishikawa Prefecture

「transcript」

Wadaiko drums have sounded across Japan for over a millennium, from festival rituals to today’s ensembles. Among them, the large O-daiko over 90cm in diameter are made in Ishikawa, most notably by Asano Taiko, founded in the Edo period and crafting drums for more than 400 years.

What sets Ishikawa’s wadaiko apart is the body. Craftspeople select centuries-old zelkova logs, hollow them, and repurpose the removed wood into smaller drums. The shells are air-dried for 2 to 5 years to ensure they last for centuries. Then, the inside is hand-carved with patterns that shape sound for different uses. Finally, the surface is lacquered for strength and sheen.

Thick cowhide is pulled across the shell and tightened using ropes while being hammered to stretch. For extra-large drums, craftsmen even jump on top of the leather to fine-tune the booming sound.

Ishikawa’s wadaiko continues to evolve with larger shells, precise tuning, and enduring finishes, creating drums that don’t just make noise but move people.
