Over 400 years ago, feudal lord Gamō Ujisato (蒲生 氏郷) encouraged lower-ranking samurai to make small folk toys during harsh winters. One became a papier-mâché doll that never stayed down, the Okiagari Koboshi.
“Koboshi” means little monk or child. Just 3 centimeters tall, it represents the quiet strength of rising again, no matter how many times it’s pushed.
Made using traditional hariko papier-mâché, artisans layer washi over a wooden mold, cut it apart, and insert a clay weight at the base. The hollow body and weighted bottom ensure it always returns upright. Each piece is hand-painted, so no two faces are the same.
Today, only one workshop preserves the original method, while modern studios create larger versions using techniques seen in Daruma dolls and Akabeko.
To this day, every January 10th at the Tōkaichi (十日市) market, families buy Okiagari Koboshi alongside windmills and bamboo whistles, known as the Aizu Three Lucky Charms. The rule is simple: buy one more than the number of family members, with the extra carrying wishes for protection, growth, and good fortune.
