The Living Heartof Japan Blue

The original indigo came from China during the Nara period, but it was in Tokushima that Awa Ai, or "Japan Blue," became a national treasure.

The fertile floodplains of the Yoshino River made it perfect for growing tade-ai, the indigo plant. Seeds sown in March are harvested and dried during the summer. Then begins a 100-day fermentation process to create sukumo, the heart of Awa Ai.

The dried leaves are piled in earthen beds, moistened, and regularly turned to encourage fermentation. The temperature rises to around 70°C, filling the room with steam and scent. Every step is guided by the artisan's senses, the texture of the leaves, the smell of the air, even the color of the rising steam.

Once matured, the sukumo is shipped to dye studios across Japan for further fermentation. The bubbles on the surface, called "Ai no Hana," or indigo flowers, signal it’s ready.

Though chemical dyes now dominate the market, true Awa Ai survives thanks to a few dedicated artisans who still bring this deep blue to life.
