Patterns You SeeOnly Up Close

In the 17th century, sumptuary laws enforcing hierarchy and frugality banned flashy fits. But Edo’s warriors still wanted to look different.

Their answer was ultra-fine Edo Komon patterns on clothing that only revealed intricate designs up close. The finer the pattern, the greater the skill needed, making these works highly sought after.

Applying these patterns begin with Ise-katagami , a special high-precision stencil. This is placed on silk, and a paste of glutinous rice, rice bran, and salt is brushed on evenly by hand, a task mastered over 10 years to ensure it reaches every opening. Acting as a resist, this paste blocks dye from penetrating the fabric. The stencil is then shifted with incredible accuracy to ensure no seam in the design. After dyeing and steaming, it is washed away to reveal crisp motifs.

Edo Komon began with geometric patterns like Goku-zame , Gyōgi , and Kaku-tōshi .

Today, artisans have expanded its use into neckties, scarves, and interior pieces, where its subtle patterns still speak Edo’s refined style.
